Why a Quality Mattress is the Real MVP

Picture this: You wake up with a clear head, a calm body, and a quiet mind. No aches, no groans, no regrets. Just you, rested and ready. But for 94% of Australians, that kind of morning is more fantasy than fact.

Before you blame the dog, the doona, or the late-night scroll, there’s something else worth investigating: your mattress.

According to global sleep research from Sealy, most Aussies aren't just tired, we’re sleeping on mattresses that have quietly stopped pulling their weight. And the impact? It’s showing up in sore backs, sluggish mornings, and a national reliance on that second (or third) coffee.

Let’s take a closer look at what the data tells us and why your mattress might be the most underrated player in your wellness game plan.

Still Waking Up Tired? You’re Not Alone

Sealy’s research found that 94% of Australians don’t wake up feeling refreshed. And it’s not just being "a bit tired", but truly unrested. That fatigue isn’t just annoying. It chips away at your energy, focus, immunity, and general sense of get-up-and-go. When poor sleep becomes the norm, it drags down your entire day and your health.

Worse still? Three in five Aussies report waking up with back pain, including people in their 20s and 30s. It’s a signal that something deeper is going on.

So what’s behind the nationwide sleep slump? The numbers point to a simple culprit: poor mattress health. Whether it’s worn out or simply wrong for your body, your bed could be holding you back from the sleep you need to show up fully every day.

Is it Time for a New Mattress?

Sealy’s research found that 45% of people still sleeping on mattresses over 10 years old say they’re not sleeping well. That’s nearly half of all sleepers hanging onto a bed that’s past its prime. A mattress isn’t a lifelong relationship. Even the best lose their shape, support, and comfort over time.

If you're not sure whether it's time to part ways with yours, do a quick self-check:

  • You wake up stiff or sore more often than not.

  • You sleep better elsewhere - hotel beds, the couch, even the floor.

  • You can feel dips, lumps, or springs under your body.

  • Your mattress is old enough to be learning to drive.

While it can be easy to shake off poor sleep as being caused by a busy life schedule, or staying up too late the night before, if you can’t remember the last time you stepped into a mattress shop, then it might just be time for a visit.

What Investing in a Quality Mattress Actually Does for You

Investing in a high-quality mattress might feel like a big leap, but the benefits are bigger than you might expect.

Here’s why it’s worth it:

  • Better back support: A quality mattress supports proper spinal alignment. Higher-quality mattresses often feature premium materials like carefully engineered coils, breathable natural materials and targeted pressure relief zones that adapt to your body. So you’re not just buying comfort, you’re buying performance and durability.

  • Fewer Allergens: Old mattresses can be a breeding ground for allergens, which is not exactly sleep-friendly. A new, well-made mattress helps support cleaner, healthier sleep hygiene (literally and figuratively).

  • Improved energy and mood: According to Sealy’s sleep study, people who invested in a premium mattress felt more productive, more positive and refreshed in the morning. In fact, a huge 89% of Sealy Posturepedic sleepers said they were satisfied with their mattress, and 83% actually woke up feeling refreshed.

And here’s the clincher: 71% of people who spent over $5,000 on a mattress said they were extremely happy with their purchase, compared to just 25% of those who spent between $500 and $1,299. Which just goes to show that investing in a high-quality mattress isn’t just a luxury, it’s a sleep essential.

How to Know if a Mattress is Right for You

A quality mattress is like a good partner. It’s supportive, reliable, and makes you feel amazing in the morning. There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to sleep. Your mattress should work with your body, not against it.

Understand Your Sleep Style & Body Type

Side sleeper? Back flopper? Midnight roller? Whatever position you lie in, your sleep style and body type play a huge role in choosing a mattress that actually works for you.

Our bedMATCH diagnostic system helps match you to the right mattress based on your unique sleep style, body type and comfort preferences (like a dating app for better sleep).

Always Try Before You Buy

You wouldn’t buy a car without taking it for a spin. So why would you spend 8 hours a night on a mattress you’ve never laid eyes (or back) on? That’s why giving a few mattresses a test lie is a total game changer.
